Cumin-Spiced Ground Beef Tacos

Once you make taco seasoning from scratch, you will never go back to those packets. It takes 30 seconds to mix together and the flavor is so much cleaner and bolder. These tacos come together in about 20 minutes, and the whole family can build their own with whatever toppings they love.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced fine
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic granules
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • 1 tsp Redmond Real Salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Corn or flour tortillas for serving

*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 3 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking it into crumbles, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the garlic, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic granules, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Stir for 1 minute.
  4. Add the water and stir. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until the liquid is mostly absorbed and the meat is saucy.
  5. Warm the tortillas and serve with your favorite toppings: diced onion, cilantro, lime wedges, avocado, and hot sauce.

Notes

  • Make a big batch of the spice blend and store in a jar. Use 2 to 3 tablespoons per pound of meat.
  • This same seasoned beef works great in burritos, nachos, quesadillas, or over rice.
  • Swap the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
