This fire tonic is not subtle. It hits you with a wave of spicy ginger and cayenne heat, followed by the earthy warmth of turmeric, the sharp tang of apple cider vinegar, and the soothing sweetness of honey. It is the kind of drink that wakes up every cell in your body. Traditional fire tonics have been used in folk herbalism for generations, and once you try one, you will understand why.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp ginger root (or 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger)
- ½ tsp turmeric
- Pinch of cayenne
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 to 2 tsp Duck River honey
- 1 cup warm water
- Juice of half a lemon
*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.
Directions
- Heat the water until warm but not boiling.
- Whisk in the ginger root, turmeric, and cayenne until dissolved.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and honey. Stir until the honey is fully melted.
- If using dried ginger root, let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, then strain. If using fresh grated ginger, strain through a fine mesh strainer.
- Drink immediately while warm.
Notes
- Start with just a pinch of cayenne and increase from there. A little goes a very long way.
- This tonic is best taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Some people prefer to take it as a concentrated shot. Simply halve the water to make a smaller, more intense serving.
- Use apple cider vinegar with the mother (the cloudy, unfiltered kind) for the most beneficial compounds.
