Homemade BBQ Sauce

Most pre-made BBQ sauces are loaded with refined sugars and ingredients you cannot pronounce. This homemade version swaps all of that for real, whole food ingredients and still delivers that smoky, sweet, tangy flavor you expect from a great BBQ sauce. It simmers together in one pot and tastes better than anything from a bottle.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar crystals
  • 2 tbsp Duck River honey
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Redmond Real Salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water

*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.

Directions

  1. Combine the tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, coconut sugar, honey, and water in a medium saucepan. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool. Transfer to a jar and refrigerate.

Notes

  • This keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne or more chili powder.
  • Use it as a glaze on grilled chicken, ribs, or pulled pork. It also works great as a dipping sauce.
