A nourishing infusion is different from a regular cup of tea. Instead of a quick steep, you let the herbs sit in hot water for several hours (or overnight), which draws out far more minerals, vitamins, and beneficial compounds. Nettle leaf is one of the most mineral-rich herbs available, and this simple preparation is a traditional way to tap into all of it.
Ingredients
- 1 oz (about 1 cup loosely packed) nettle leaf
- 1 quart boiling water
- 1 to 2 tsp Duck River honey (optional)
*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.
Directions
- Place the nettle leaf in a quart-size mason jar.
- Pour boiling water over the herbs, filling the jar to the top.
- Cap tightly and let steep for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
- Strain through a fine mesh strainer, squeezing the herbs to extract all the liquid.
- Drink at room temperature or gently reheat. Stir in honey if desired.
Notes
- The long steep makes this infusion darker and more mineral-rich than a quick tea. The taste is earthy and green, similar to a rich vegetable broth.
- Store any leftover infusion in the fridge and drink within 24 to 36 hours.
- Try adding a squeeze of lemon to brighten the flavor.
