Oat Straw Mineral Infusion

Oat straw is the green stem of the oat plant, harvested before the grain matures, and it is loaded with minerals like calcium, magnesium, and silica. Combined with nettle leaf and red raspberry leaf, this infusion becomes a mineral powerhouse. The flavor is mild, slightly sweet, and very drinkable. The key is the long steep, which extracts far more nutrients than a quick cup of tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oat straw
  • 1 tbsp nettle leaf
  • 1 tbsp red raspberry leaves
  • 1 quart boiling water

*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.

Directions

  1. Place the oat straw, nettle leaf, and red raspberry leaves in a quart-size mason jar.
  2. Pour boiling water over the herbs, filling the jar to the top.
  3. Cap tightly and let steep for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the richest mineral content.
  4. Strain through a fine mesh strainer and drink at room temperature or gently reheated.

Notes

  • Oat straw is technically gluten-free because it is the stem, not the grain. However, if you have celiac disease, look for oat straw that is certified gluten-free to avoid cross-contamination.
  • This infusion is best consumed within 24 to 36 hours. Store leftovers in the fridge.
  • Add a spoonful of Duck River honey or a squeeze of lemon if you want a little extra flavor.
