These black bean burgers actually taste good, and they actually hold together. Mashed beans, oats, and the right amount of spice create a patty that is hearty, flavorful, and satisfying even for meat lovers. They have a nice crust when pan-fried and work great with all the classic burger toppings.
Ingredients
- 3 cups cooked black beans (about 1½ cups dried, soaked and cooked), and patted dry
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ small onion, diced fine
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ¼ tsp cayenne
- ½ tsp Redmond Real Salt
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- Buns and toppings for serving
*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.
Directions
- Mash the black beans in a large bowl with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture.
- Stir in the oats, onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne, and salt. Mix until combined.
- Shape into 6 patties. If the mixture is too wet, add more oats a tablespoon at a time.
- Refrigerate the patties for 15 minutes to help them firm up.
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4 to 5 minutes per side until a dark crust forms.
- Serve on buns with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Chilling the patties before cooking helps them hold together better.
- Top with avocado, pickled onions, and a squeeze of lime for a Southwestern style.
- These freeze well. Place parchment between the patties and freeze for up to 3 months.
