Throat Soothing Tea

When your throat feels raw and scratchy, this tea coats and soothes in a way that regular tea simply cannot. Marshmallow root and slippery elm both contain mucilage, a gel-like substance that creates a protective layer. Licorice root adds natural sweetness and its own soothing properties. Finished with a spoonful of local honey, this is comfort in a cup.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp marshmallow root
  • 1 tsp licorice root
  • 1 tsp slippery elm inner bark
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 to 2 tsp Duck River honey

*Bolded ingredients are products we typically carry at Tare Bulk Foods.

Directions

  1. Combine the marshmallow root, licorice root, and slippery elm in a small saucepan with the water.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Do not boil vigorously, as this can break down the mucilage.
  3. Simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Strain into a mug, pressing on the herbs to extract all the liquid.
  5. Stir in honey once the tea has cooled slightly.

Notes

  • This tea will have a slightly thicker, silkier texture than regular tea. That is the mucilage at work.
  • Licorice root adds quite a bit of natural sweetness, so taste before adding honey.
  • Drink warm, not hot, for the best soothing effect.
