Turmeric Ginger Tonic

This tonic is like a warm hug on a cold day. Turmeric and ginger bring an earthy, peppery warmth, while fresh lemon juice adds brightness that lifts the whole drink. A pinch of black pepper ties into the spice profile and helps your body make the most of the turmeric. It is the kind of drink you crave once you get hooked on it.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp ginger root, grated (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Duck River honey
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Directions

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce heat to low.
  2. Add the turmeric, ginger, and black pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Strain into a mug if using fresh ginger root, or stir well if using ground spices.
  4. Add the lemon juice and honey. Stir until the honey dissolves.

Notes

  • This drink stains everything it touches, so be careful with light-colored cups and countertops.
  • For a creamier version, add a splash of coconut milk after straining.
  • Make a big batch of the turmeric-ginger base and store it in the fridge. Reheat individual servings throughout the week.
